We are proud to announce that we managed to maintain a constant number of attendees throughout all our meetings so far: a rotating panel of three, with one new member at a time! At this rate, we will outgrow the capacity of the grad club in just a few years.

This time around, we chatted about all sorts of open-source projects, including:

We also decided to set a topic of discussion for our next meeting, and to open suggestions for that topic on the mailing list. Next meeting is tentatively scheduled at May 17 7:00pm in the Grad Club.

We would like to use this opportunity to invite anyone in Kingston, Ontario with however slight interest in open-source software or hardware to join the discussion by subscribing to the mailing list (Google group).

Our tri-member first meeting yesterday was an absolute success. Two students, Nick and I, an authentic Kingstonian, Bill, and an exciting plan with a promising future for our group.

After the casual introductions, and Bill getting lost and found (as documented in the mailing list), we discussed two main topics:

  1. How to publicize the group to extend our member base:
    • Announce the group in departmental mailing lists at Queen’s.
    • Spread the word among friends, colleagues, and acquaintances who might be interested themselves, or may have the privilege of effectively spreading the news in larger circles.
    • Contact employees and management of local IT-related businesses, such as software development, web design, support services, and computer hardware retailers.
  2. Plan the next meeting
    • Tentatively scheduled on Wednesday, April 27, 2011.
    • Tentative location: Queen’s Grad Club (to be confirmed).

If you can help with advertising the group, even within small groups, please do. We accept all the help we can get, and appreciate the slightest of efforts. It may be useful to note, while announcing the group, that this is a “no prior technical knowledge required” kind of activity. The only requirement is your interest in open-source software or hardware.

If you read this post, you have captured all the serious discussions of our first meeting, and missed all the fun!

Finally, we would like to present our special thanks to Bill for his persistence on getting to the meeting, and for his valuable contribution during the meeting.
